Green tea is a product made from the Camellia sinensis plant. It can be prepared as a beverage, which can have some health effects. Or an “extract” can be made from the leaves to use as medicine. Although there are about 40 countries in the world that produce tea, India leads the pack that too by a clear margin. Traditionally, emphasis has been on black tea, jasmine tea etc, but recently, the numbers are turning in favor of green tea. One reason for this is the multiple studies that have confirmed the health benefits of green tea. Following this, a lot of world markets have a shown a marked surge in preference towards green tea.
Some people use green tea to prevent various cancers, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, gastric cancer, lung cancer, solid tumor cancers and skin cancer related to exposure to sunlight. Some women use green tea to fight human papilloma virus (HPV), which can cause genital warts, the growth of abnormal cells in the cervix (cervical dysplasia), and cervical cancer.
Green tea manufacturing process
Green tea is made from the top two leaves and buds of a shrub, Camellia sinensis, of the family Theaceace and the order Theales. The manufacturing process of green tea is as follows.
- Harvesting: Typically, the tea leaves are harvested by experienced tea pickers who know exactly which parts to pick and which to avoid. The harvesting time varies in different parts of the country.
- Drying: In order to prevent fermentation of the picked leaves, they have to be dried suitably. Some manufacturers prefer withering as well. The basic idea behind this process is to prevent the oxidation of the enzymes present in the leaves.
- Shaping: Rolling and shaping is mostly done by machinery. The shape and size of the leaves depend on the manufacture and his clientele. This step is where the flavouring of leaves is commenced.
- Final drying: Before these leaves are stored, they have to be dried for about 30 minutes to ensure there is no moisture content at all.
